This whole week I’ve been at a loss on what to write about. So I think I’ll share a poem I wrote back in 2010 (throwing it way back now!). It’s one of my favorites, an oldie but a goodie. I opened my childhood diaries in search of the exact date when I wrote it. It took quite a bit of detective work (one of my favorite things) but I was able to find it! I was in 11th grade when I wrote it, just 16 years old. February 09, 2010.
A Little Poem Backstory
At 16, I was pretty boy crazy, I’ll have to admit. Reading through my old diaries/journals makes me chuckle. That really is the only thing you can do sometimes with all the crazy stuff you did as a kid/teen. “Did I really do that?” “I can’t believe I said that!” Are both things I say quite often when reading back on my early teen years. With that being confessed and out in the open, I’ll continue on to what possessed me to write a poem about love. I was originally wanting to write a song, but ended up writing a poem instead.
On 2/6/10 I was hanging with some friends and my crush (at the time) and while he was running passed me with a friend of his, he looked at me and said “Hi Meghan.” I was a quiet and shy person, not very outgoing at all. So for my crush to pay attention to me and say hi, sent my mind into a frenzy. Lol So that day sparked my inspiration for this poem.
The day after (2/7/10) I went to a Super Bowl party for Super Bowl 44, Indianapolis Colts vs. New Orleans Saints. I saw my crush cuddling his then girlfriend, and that spurred more feeling and questions. Is what I was feeling, real? Could it be true love? I was pretty confused.
On 2/8/10 I wrote down multiple questions that eventually found their way into my poem.
2/9/10 was a pretty slow day, and I decided that was a good thing, because it would help me write and finish my poem. This is also the day where I decided to turn it into a poem instead of a song. This was also the night I finished the poem, but I didn’t share it til the next day.
That’s pretty much how this poem came into existence and I hope it helps someone who might be feeling the same way I was back then. So without further delay, here it is!
What Is Love?
Is Love the feeling when just the thought of you makes me smile?
Is Love the feeling when you say my name so perfectly?
Is Love the feeling when someone mentions your name?
Or Is Love the feeling when you simply look at me?
Is Love the feeling when I want to be by your side at every moment of the day?
Is Love the feeling when I see you holding someone else?
Is Love the feeling when I lie awake at night thinking about you?
Or Is Love the feeling when I see your face and become breathless?
Is Love the feeling when the thought of goodbye makes me die a little inside?
Is Love the feeling when the sound of your voice tempts me to stop and listen?
Is Love the feeling when all I ever think about is you?
Or Is Love the feeling when the stars in your eyes glisten?
Some may say that Love is a beautiful thing,
But until it happens to me,
I will just have to keep on guessing.
My grandma was one of my biggest supporters in my writing. She enjoyed writing too, and I’m thankful to have been able to share with her parts of my writing. I emailed this poem to her (3/2/10), and I have her reply printed out and taped into one of my writing notebooks. It brings me such inspiration, so I thought I would share that with you as well.
I enjoyed your poem very much Meghan. It seems that every time you touch your pen to paper, you produce a masterpiece of some kind. Keep it up. It blesses my heart to see you enjoying the talent that God has given you. He too is the One who will bring that one true love to you, one very special day, in His time. Just keep waiting, watching and praying.
I love you very much dear and it is such fun watching you grow into the sweet Christian young woman that you are.
